The Evolution of the CB Chopper

the CB Chopper is a new project I picked up in November, 2003. I plan on taking the bike in the pic above and doing some chopping and dropping.

The bike is a 1972 Honda CB750 and is in need of some work. The carbs need cleaning, the tank has rust in it and needs to be sealed, the pipes are currently hacked off (although the headers are intact) and according to Lu over at www.scooterpuzzles.com (my painter), "That paint has GOT to go".

Although I reserve the right to change my mind on a whim, I plan on ditching the OEM fenders for a tire hugger in the rear and a dagger fender in the front. I'll keep the tank, because it is an old school style chopper tank. I'll have to decided whether I want to go with struts or shocks, but once way or another, the rear will have to be dropped in order to maintain the proper rake/trail geometry.

So...with that in mind, the order of business is:

Get her running.

  • Clean the carbs
  • Check the top end
  • Seal the tank with POR15
  • Figure out a temporary baffle for the exhaust so I at least have some backpressure.
  • New battery

Check all electrical

  • Electrical is going to be a mess on this one.
  • I'll probably ditch the starter completely and go as a kicker
  • Rerun all wiring.
  • Ditch the stock gauges and go with mini gauges.

Check the drivetrain

  • Chain, sprockets, etc...
  • New tires are a must
  • Wheels may need to be relaced and/or chromed
  • Either new springs or struts on the rear, new springs on the front
  • New brake pads

Give her a makeover

  • She'll need custom paint
  • Possible paint the frame as well
  • Drag bars and new controls
  • Custom exhaust
  • Forward controls

Ride her like a bat outta hell!!

Pictures will be coming...in the meantime.... wanna see my other bike?
