| UB Web sites and email addresses | |
| Retro | Okay..got a question for you all.
Does anyone (other than B) use the free UnitedBikers email and web space? Here's the reason I ask. I am thinking about changing the system so that UB members can benefit from POP3 email.
With the current setup, UnitedBikers offers free domain forwarding. This means that you can have yourname@yourname.unitedbikers.com reserved and all your email to that address goes to whatever alternate email you want. The problem is that with this, you don't actually have any webmail space on UB and whenever you reply to someone, you can't use your UB email address.
My current host is offering me 1,000 free POP3 (web-based) email accounts for free. Basically, these are just like Hotmail accounts without the Spam. This means that the first 1,000 members that wanted them could have a free email address that looks like yourname@unitedbikers.com . You would be able to access this email from anywhere on the web at anytime.
So, does anyone want a free email address?? Would anyone care if I switched systems? Oh yeah. If I switch, the free Web sites, would no longer be part of UnitedBikers, but everyone could upload their pics into their library anyway.
Ideas?? Thoughts???

The only downside is that

| rwd407 | I like the idea... I'm always available for a web email address... I used to used Yahoo, but then they got firewalled from my office. No prob, I forwarded everything from there to myrealbox.com (nice deal by the way), but now Yahoo wants you to pay for forwarding. Heck,, not gonna happen. So my yahoo account will die a slow death. What I'm gettin' at here I guess is it seems in the cyber world it's only free for a while, so I presume myrealbox.com will eventually wanna charge for some services. Soooo, yep, i'm in favor of collecting "free" emails. If nothing else, "for use at a later date"...
Ya know I expect nobody cares about all that crap i just wrote, but it's early and i have fresh coffee coursing through my veins....

| Retro | Just so everyone knows...this email will remain free for as long as this site exists. One of the main reasons I see this as a benefit is because of the death of free email.
I'll hold out for a bit longer to get some more feedback.

| 1wildhair | I'm fine with it. I get my e-mail addresses as part of my web hosting fees for my business. Not sure if I'll use it much, but as long as the UB site stays relatively the same, it's OK by me. Do what ya gotta do.

| Retro | Another thought is that it's a great way to help spread the word about the site. If people start seeing UB email addresses all over, they might stop by and check it out.
Looks like everyone so far (except Lu...) is okay with the switch. I'll hold off a bit longer to see if anyone else chimes in.

| KCLu | OK, I see the advertisement value, I'll go with it... I'll even use it and cancel my yahoo addy. How's that? See I just needed one good reason.

Now using the wifes laptop and her company is their own ISP so I can still get on this way. Whatta pain. Cable guy comin out Sunday to fix it all (I hope).

| Retro | Well, after thinking about it for a while I have decided to get discontinue UBs relationship with Community Architect - who is currently doing the hosting for the UB websites and email. I have done some pretty extensive testing and their email system has gotten progressively worse (1 in 5 messages are not being delivered) and their Web pages now how gobs of popups.
Instead, I am going to host the email accounts on my own server. Basically, the first 1000 people who want free (and banner free) WebMail with a UB address (i.e. retro@unitedbikers.com) can have one. I will be setting up an app form that will make it very easy for you to set up your own account.
I plan on making this change late next week, so if you have photos etc...on a UB website, I recommend you move them to your photo gallery instead. I will let everyone know when the changes are made.
