Looking into a trailer
1wildhairAfter several long trips this year riding 2-up with luggage, I've decided that a trailer is gonna be behind my bike next year. Anyone have any experience with different brands? I'm leaning towards the Cyclemate - seem the best combo of price/capacity & features. Plus their made in MN (Edgerton)so I can ride over to pick it up. Any trailer pulling tips, maintainence tips, loading tips, etc..... would be appreciated. Red ISRA #4151 "Life is short & the Road is long - Enjoy your ride" SNOW SUX !!
PJDHey Red, I know quite a few wingers that haul trailers. Haven't heard any of them talk of any serious problems especially if you stick with the more reputable brands. You didn't say, did you just want to haul gear or are you looking for a pop-up camper as well. There are a few of those around. Of course you could always get ridiculous (like I did)and get a camper that hauls the bike . Let me know what you're looking for and I'll try to get you more info.

1wildhairPJ - I've looked at the pop-ups, and they are kinda nice, but the missus prefers to motel it (hot shower, warm room, etc) so it's just for gear. I wanted something small - the bigger the trailer, the more stuff she'll want to take. And a camper capable of hauling the bike is not in the cards. PJDI hear ya Red. I'm not sure women understand the concept of packing light. Anyway here's a link to the Bushtec site. This is one of the trailers I see the Wingers pulling but you may want to shop around, there are plenty more brands out there. http://www.bushtec.com

Looked at the Bushtec - heavy trailer, even empty, and very pricey - around 3K by the time you add a cooler. I've looked at most of the brands out there - what I need is experienced advice from someone that may have actually used a trailer or 2. Like - is a swivel hitch worth the extra $$ OR independent or solid axle? - that kind of thing. And Lu, I don't know about all women, but I do know mine would bring every outfit she owned if there was room to take them all. And then complain that she still had to leave a couple pair of shoes behind. You should have seen how loaded that poor bike was for LaborDay weekend. The front end was so light, if I gassed it too hard, I was afraid I'd never get the front wheel back to the pavement. Red ISRA #4151 "Life is short & the Road is long - Enjoy your ride" SNOW SUX !!
KCLuHey Red, did ya know there's a whole forum for trailer towing? check it out: http://forums.delphiforums.com/MCTrailertowing/start Seem like some nice folks over there. Ride safe & Sparkly! Lu
1wildhairYep, been there. Got some useful info from those folks. I think I'm gonna get a Cyclemate - seems like the best trailer for the $$ Red ISRA #4151 "Life is short & the Road is long - Enjoy your ride" SNOW SUX !!
RetroRed, In case you haven't already bought one, here is a page that I found that has links to a bunch of manufacturers. http://home.att.net/~tele6/links.htm#Camping Ride safe! Retro

KCLuThose are nice little trailors. I'm thinking the folks next to us at Algona had one of the "Sundowners". Now, if I can just convince Choo Choo that that's ALL we need to haul everything to Sturgis. (Yea! Right! Like THAT'S going to happen!) Ride safe & Sparkly! Lu
RetroI was looking at those sundowners too! Those are nice pop-ups! I thought the Scooter Schooner was pretty cool too! Plenty of sleeping space, a table for four, grill, propane, cooler...all ya need is the beer! Ride safe! Retro

1wildhairRetro, Thanks for the links. I've visited most of them already. For the $$, the Cyclemate offers the most features. And if I can't find a used one, I'll buy a new one in the spring. Hitch is on it's way from Australia. The pop-ups are nice, but my wife likes to motel it, so I need a cargo trailer. Red ISRA #4151 "Life is short & the Road is long - Enjoy your ride" SNOW SUX !!
