| Remember Your First Day Riding?? | |
| Retro | I was cruising around the net for biker related material and came across this pretty funny article about this "biker mama's" first experiences:
http://www.motomama.com/badass.html
This got me thinking about the first time I ever rode a bike (not including mini-bikes) at the ripe old age of 14. My dad took me out in a church parking lot on my 1971 Honda SL175 (I still have it) and I rode circles and praticed starting and stopping. About a week later, I was tearing up the pavement loving every minute on 2 wheels.
Do you remember your first day riding? Anything cool/crazy happen?
Ride safe!

| dusty | It was 1973... I don't think the brain cells from that far back are still operational! First time on a bike was at the Shawnee Mission West High School motorcycle driver education class. I think it was the first one in the country and we were the first class. Anyway, we had some 125cc enduro on/off road bikes and we learned the basics of checking the oil, tires, etc then we got to ride around the parking lot and some trails on the school grounds. Had to wear bright orange "Student Driver" vests, but we thought we were pretty cool when we finally got to go out on the street! It was a full semester class, just like regular driver's ed, and afterward we were invited to ride in the Shawnee Days parade. Woo hooo!! - Dusty www.hkrause.com/bike |
| rwd407 | Hadda be 1970. I was 12 Had been buggin' my folks endlessly to let me buy a mini-bike. I mean EVERYBODY had 'em. I had saved my money and it was just SO unfair. I mean there was nothing dangerous at all about those tiny-wheeled, scrub-braked, throttle stickin' machines!! Anyhow, clearly I was gettin' nowhere. Then outta the blue my dad takes off one Saturday morning to go play golf. Only odd thing was that he took Mom's station wagon and not his car. I knew this meant trouble because surely he would be stopping by some nursery, lawn supply, deck building, fence-paintin' place. That sucker was gonna come back with that freakin' station wagon loaded down with a summer's FULL of work for me!!! Damnit!!!
Well he did come back and that old station wagon was loaded down a bit. I am serious, I didn't even wanna go outside when he returned and hollered into the house for me to come help him. What a jerk!!! At least he could act like he was gonna help me unload all the crap I knew he had bought!
Tah-dah, step outside and look in the back of the car and sure enough he's got a shiney black Honda 65 crammed in there. Now mind you, this was NOT the set-thru "girls bike" design, this was the big S*** with actual gas tank where it's supposed to be. Turns out he'd had this bike lined up for some time, but the heathen had thought it prudent to not bring it home until near summer so as not to affect my studies... I mean,,, gosh,,, surely a motorcyle could make me hate school even more! ;-)
So we pull the bugger out, gas her up and off I go. Yep, he even brougt me a helmet. I mean to tell ya, I was the KING of the street, block, neighborhood,,, the whole darn county. I had an actual motorcyle!!! NOT a mini-bike (a toy). My muscles bulged, the girls clamored just to be near me!!! (okay that part really didn't happen,, but it could've if i wasn't such a dork)
The part that I guess qualifies here and humorous (albeit feeble) is that all the buds who had the mini-bikes and they all swore up and down those suckers would do 45 MPH,,, well my actual motorcyle had an actual speedometer... Ohhhhhhh,,, more like they were lucky to hit anything near 25.... I'd just shift gears and leave 'em....
Now aren't ya glad you asked???

| MidniteRoady | After going thru go-carts and mini-bikes, Grandpa Jay got me a Cushman scooter. You know, the one with the gear shift up on the tank. He lived in the country and his drive way was 1/2 mile long. Hard telling how many miles I put on that thing...Don't think I ever dropped it....'course I didn't drink when I was 9. Damn, wish I still had it....supposed to be quite the collector item. Farmer Mike 01 MidnightStar "I don't wanna pickle, just wanna ride my motorcickle" |

This one's up here in KC! You're right about these things being collector's items. And the parts alone are worth a ton as well...
Ride safe!

| uniquely | I was 9.. many years ago...lol...when I was taken for my first ride....it was on a Kaw 1000...the dude pulled a wheely...doing a high rate of speed....I think trying to scare me...but....needless to say....after I cleaned out my pants..I was hooked....the first harley I rode was at the age of 14...and it was a classic with a suicide clutch....a ride different than anything else I had experienced....but it got my attention..so much so that I have sense learned all I could about all bikes....I even hand lapped valves for a knuckle head....and when she purred...I purred....now I find the need to be in the driver seat and feel that speed at my comand.....there is nothing like being in the wind.....but I dont have to tell you all that.... Live to ride.. Ride to live.. I just wish he would tell me which bike we are riding so i can dress to fit... |
| Jim | Gawd yes, I remember. I was about 13 (1956) and bought Whizzer motorbike from a "friend" with my entire life savings. $25. Damn thing didn't have any brakes and the throttle cable was broken, but I rode her any way. Around the block and down the alley until I ran it into a bush. Scared tha living poop out of me. I then spent the rest ot the summer making that thing ridable and sold it an other friend for, oh about $10 to help buy me that new Cushman. But the few rides on that Whizzer completed the addiction process and I have been hooke ever since.
Hey Midniteroady, my son and I have a Cushman Eagle. Completly restored and custom painted. He and his wife took it to Laughlin this spring. He on his Road Star and she on the Eagle, must have been a sight to see.
