Ride Report: Do-Dat & HD 100th Anniversary
John BennettYesterday we had a great ride up around Nacogdoches, Texas. First we stopped at the Harley shop in Nac. They were hosting a party celebrating HD's 100th anniversary. They had a bike show, free cake, and best of all, *free beer*. We hung around there for a while looking a bikes. Next we shot across the highway to the Do-Dat Barbecue at the Nacogdoches County Exposition Center. I had never attended this event. Ten dollars gets you in the door. Once inside you have access to all the *free beer* you can drink and all the free BBQ you can eat! Could this be a sampling of what lies inside the pearly gates of heaven? I think so. As you might expect, I got my ten dollars worth. They had about 90 different teams cooking BBQ and giving it away. Yes, that's right, you walk up to their booth and say "Gimme some chicken, a bit of your pork, one of your ribs, and a touch of that brisket" ...and they give it to you! Some booths were also giving away swag like drink coozies, bags of peanuts, pens, bumper stickers, etc. After making two circuits of the BBQ booths and several trips to the beer tent, we went inside the Expo center and sat down. Inside they had a horseshoe competition going. They had a stage with lots of merchandise up for charity auction. The auctioneer was a hoot to watch. He wore a tuxedo coat, a cowboy hat, and shorts. He was a graduate of the Hard-Core Pentecostal Full-Gospel Sword-of-the-Lamb Speaking-in-Tongues Snake-Handling school of auctioneering! He jumped all over that stage and yelled like a maniac. It was great fun to watch! I made several more trips to the beer tent to help all that animal flesh to stay down. We had a great time sitting in the bleachers shooting the breeze. Next we rode back over to the HD shop. There were even more bikes than before. We discovered one of our friends' Sportster had won first place in the bike show. He had a cool trophy to prove it. We hung around and participated in the drawing of door prizes and listened to the band. It was getting late and we were tired so we all split for home. A great day with great comradery and a great ride! The Do-Dat BBQ gets the John Bennett "Good Value Award". ==========================================
