My passing lamps have an in-line fuse and it went out last week. I replaced the fuse and everything worked ok until yesterday. My passing lamps are only wired to the high beams. Yesterday when I turned on the high beams the main headlight fuse blew. I replaced it and it blew again immediately when I turned on the high beams.
I will not have the opportunity to dig into everything until Monday, anyone have any ideas what I should look for? I am assuming a bad or pinched wire, water in something, or what?

| Retro | Also check to be sure you have a relay installed. Spotlights draw a lot on the electrical system and if you don't have a relay installed, it will start drawing too much and pop fuses.
Here's a basic relay of what the wiring should look like:

| Fiftygrit | On my harley FLHT my passing lamps or running lamps are ony on when my low beem is on when i turn on my high beem my passing lamps go off so the amp drain is not so high, i also have a switch on the dash which i can turn them off manually, if these are a new install you may want to lower the bulb watage so you dont blow fuses, good luck. |
| klif | Well it's not a new install, it's been this way since I bought the bike a year ago. It just sort of developed this problem overnight. Thanks for the diagram Retro. I will dig into it monday and see what I find.

| Retro | Klif,
Was it exposed to a lot of water recently or was it sheltered during the storms? If it was in those rains, you might have some moisture buildup in your electrical system that is causing a short somewhere.
Just a thought....

| Sgt.B | I would check all the wires Im betting one has rubbed itself on a sharp corner. Especially if the fuse is lasting a week or so thn going out. Check the wires when you turn from left to right and see if one of them is stretched around a edge somewhere.
Good Luck!! I hate messing with wiring...

10 seconds to tape the wire, two hours to find it and get everything back together. ![]() |
