A Brisk Ride To Work
RetroTwas a bit chilly on the way to work this morning (50 degrees). Not too bad, though. I still opted for the half helmet rather than the full face, which will come out as soon as the temps regularly drop into the 40s. I was just curious as to what everyone has planned for cold-weather riding gear. Mine usually consists of: 1) wool socks 2) thermal underwear tops and bottoms (which I removed when I get to work...too hot) 3) A great pair of gloves with thinsulate liners 4) t-shirt, shirt, fleece pullover, and leather jacket (with the neck protector buttoned up) In the past, I wore leathers but when the seams rotted (they were 6 years old), I never reinvested in a new set. I'll prolly go ahead and find a new set for this winter and add them to the list. So....what's everyone else planning for the cold rides?? Oh yeas...just an FYI for Ron...70 degrees does not count as cold weather riding. Ride safe! Retro

rwd407"Oh yeas...just an FYI for Ron...70 degrees does not count as cold weather riding." Well it does count here... In fact this morning I rode to work in a frigid 65 degrees. I mean heck, I even hadda snap up the first three buttons on my vest... And i'm leavin' work early today, so it may not even be up to 80 by the time i leave... Oh woe unto me.... FXSBAlong with what Retro listed, I find a good wool sweater over a cotton turtle neck holds the warmth in nicely. I also wear a lot of black in mid-range temps of around 45 to 50 to soak the sun up. When it actually gets cold (mid 30's to low 40's) I find my rain coveralls actually do better at holding the heat in then my leathers do, and will block the wind better. The other thing is a change in riding habits, below 50 degrees the pavement does not hold as well as over 50, so corners are taken slower and more room is allowed for stopping. KCLuI'm thinking about investing in a pair of heated gloves and sox for this winter. I seem to keep the body pretty warm, but those little capillaries in the far reaches of my extremities just aren't able to conduct enough heat to keep me comfortable, which translates to safe for me anyway. I wear silk long johns, under jeans, under chaps. Above the waste I wear a tank top, under a t-shirt, under a long sleeved t-shirt, under my thinsulate jacket liner, under my leather jacket. I may try adding rubber gloves for the hands, and maybe I can find some over sized condoms for my feet. Hey, it could work! LOL! Ride safe & Sparkly! Lu
bearElectric clothes is the only way to go, but a pair of first gear killamjaro pants and a matching lined jacket are great and they are waterproof, so you don't need to take a rain suit with you, throw a electric heated jacket liner under the jacket and you are good for down to 32-38 deg. and with long underware botoms under the pants you are snug as a bug in a rug...hands are something else, the best thing I found are a pair of leather mittins with wool liners. gloves, let the cold air surrond your fingers with mittens they help keep them warm as they are touching...now tomorow I'm going to buy some electric gloves, LOL feet, warm wool socks, wool holds heat in even when it is wet, so they work good for me down to around 32-40 deg. after that my feet are cold, but they do sell electric socks, but the down side to them is when you go for a walk you are walking on wires and it hurts.. now for the shocker, the first gear pants and jacket will cost more than the electric clothes with the heat controller..and most of you have the leather jacket and the chaps to wear over the heated stuff, and I sure hope you got a rainsuit, I prefer a two peice works for me, everybody has to figer it out for themselves..... years of riding has taught me how to be comfy down to 32 deg.. now I really don't like to ride when it is that cold, but I like to ride so I must go in the cold also, simple, huh?? and Yes the coldest I ever rode was 17 deg. for about 250 miles, before electric clothes was ever invented, I was very, very cold, I lined my clothes, under them, with newspapers and taped carbard on the handelbars to break the wind on my hands...I had to do it as I didn't have a car.....what fun... KCLuI forgot about the mitten part! I can't believe I haven't broken out my seal skin mittens with the beaver pelt cuffs (no comment fromt the peanut gallery )! They worked on the snow machines up north, they should work on the scoot too, right? LOL! Ride safe & Sparkly! Lu
Nite_RyderI picked up a cheap set of chaps off one of the vendors tents here durring bike week last year for about 30 bucks. i olny have worn them a few dozen times or so when its really cold (no not 65 degrees Ron ;) so if they arent the best so what. I still got my snowmobile suit if if needed. Tested it at 20 below a couple of years ago on the sleds. say Ron last time i was down your way it was like 70 out and i was headed to the pool and all the locals were wearing gloves. have you aclimated already or do you still enjoy the winter fla weather.

rwd407Nite Ryder, I've become aclimated. Took a couple of years. I mean I spent ten miserable cold years in MI. So yeah, I wouldn't be in gloves at 70 like some. In fact I refuse to wear gloves in FL except on the bike. I've been cold and I've been warm. Warm in better. For me at least. And yeah, when we do get our cold snaps here (we even get a frost once or twice every year or so) I don't like it. I don't mind cuttin' the grass year round. And Retro, I've yet to have to scrap any sunshine off my windshield ;-) Ron 2002 Yamaha V-Star 1100 Classic.

JimRon, It looks like them folks north of the Mason Jar er Mason Dixon line are startign the yearly whine tasting contest. I looked at a few of the weather banners and came up with this:
Eden Prairie, MN -- 35 degrees Kansas City, MO -- 49 degrees Tupelo, MS -- 65 degrees Orlando Fl. -- 82 degrees
I would go for a ride if I wasn't damaged. Hell I may call a friend an see if he will take me for a ride. Nylon jacket should be enough. Jim AMA Ironbutt Association Jimmy is not very sharing and does not play well with others First grade report card 19--
